*If fertilization occurs HCG hormone helps in maintaining corpus luteum and keeps the uterine lining thick. 

*If fertilization does not occur. Then corpus luteum degenerates and the progesterone level drops. Which leads to the onset of  menstrual phase.                

                   

             MENSTRUAL PHASE

                  

Decreased progesterone & estrogen levels

Shredding of thickened lining of uterus along with unfertilized egg. 

*Duration=3-5days

*Average blood loss=50-100 ml
